Dental care designed for children

Pediatric dentistry (pedodontics) is the branch of dentistry focused on the oral health of infants, children and adolescents. Children's teeth and jaws are developing β€” their dental needs are different from adults, and their emotional experience of dental care shapes their attitude to oral health for life.

Dr. Balaji Gupta V is an MDS-qualified pedodontist with 17 years of experience. His approach is built on patience, trust and a calm clinical environment. We take the time to let children become comfortable before any treatment begins β€” there are no surprises and no rushing.

Treatments for children

✦
Dental check-ups & cleaning

Regular 6-monthly examinations, professional cleaning and fluoride application β€” the foundation of healthy teeth through childhood.

✦
Cavity treatment

Gentle decay removal and filling of primary (milk) teeth β€” preserving them until natural loss to protect jaw development and spacing.

✦
Pulpotomy (baby root canal)

Removal of infected pulp tissue in a baby tooth to eliminate pain and preserve the tooth β€” appropriate when extraction would harm spacing.

✦
Pit & fissure sealants

Protective coating applied to the deep grooves of back teeth β€” preventing cavities from forming in the most decay-prone surfaces.

✦
Space maintainers

Custom appliances fitted after premature loss of a baby tooth β€” holding space for the permanent tooth and preventing crowding.

✦
Orthodontic assessment

Early assessment of jaw growth and tooth alignment β€” identifying issues that are easier to correct when caught during growth phases.

Our approach to anxious children

01

Introduction visit

First appointment is about getting comfortable β€” no drills, no treatment. The child explores the chair, meets the team and sees the equipment.

02

Tell β€” Show β€” Do

We explain what we're going to do, show the child first (on a model or their finger), then perform β€” gradually building confidence and trust.

03

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

For mildly anxious children, nitrous oxide relaxation reduces anxiety and discomfort while keeping the child conscious and co-operative.

04

Conscious sedation

For highly anxious children, those with special needs, or complex procedures, oral or IV conscious sedation allows safe, comfortable treatment.

05

Positive reinforcement

Every visit ends on a positive note. Building a child's confidence in dental care is as important to us as completing the treatment.

When should my child first visit the dentist?

  • First visit: ideally by age 1, or when the first tooth erupts β€” whichever comes first
  • Every 6 months thereafter for routine check-ups and cleaning
  • Immediately if your child has tooth pain, visible decay or swelling
  • If a baby tooth is knocked out or damaged following trauma
  • When you notice crowding, extra teeth or prolonged retention of baby teeth
  • Before starting school β€” a complete oral health baseline for future comparison

Frequently asked questions

Are baby teeth important? They fall out anyway.
Very much so. Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth, allow proper chewing and speech development, and guide the permanent teeth into correct position. An infected baby tooth that is extracted prematurely can cause spacing problems, crowding and orthodontic issues requiring treatment later. Preserving baby teeth until their natural time is important.
My child is scared of the dentist. What can we do?
This is extremely common and entirely manageable. We start with a no-treatment introduction visit so the child becomes familiar with the environment without any stress. We use tell-show-do techniques, and for children who remain anxious, nitrous oxide or conscious sedation is available. Most children who come in frightened leave feeling comfortable by the second or third visit.
When do children need their first orthodontic assessment?
A first orthodontic review is recommended around age 7–8 β€” when enough permanent teeth have erupted to assess jaw growth and alignment. Early intervention ("Phase 1 treatment") is sometimes recommended at this stage to make Phase 2 treatment easier or shorter later. If you notice significant crowding, crossbite or jaw asymmetry earlier, bring your child sooner.
How do I prepare my child for their first dental visit?
Keep it positive and low-key. Avoid using words like "pain," "needle" or "drill." Tell them they'll get to sit in a special chair and the dentist will count their teeth. Reading books about going to the dentist beforehand can help. Arrive a few minutes early so the child can get comfortable in the waiting area before being called in.
Is fluoride safe for children?
Yes, when used in appropriate amounts. Professional fluoride applications at the clinic use regulated concentrations that are safe and significantly reduce cavity risk. For home use, a smear of fluoride toothpaste for children under 3, a pea-sized amount for ages 3–6. Your dentist will advise based on your child's cavity risk.
